Dissertation Editing—A Checklist

Essentially, a dissertation comprises the following:

  1. Introduction
  2. Literature Review
  3. Methodology
  4. Data Analysis
  5. Conclusions

It is recommended that you set up a Table of Contents early enough for it to be an aid to the writing of your dissertation. A properly set up and implemented table of contents can be invaluable in the preparation of your paper, and to your readers (and editors!). If it is clear and concise and logical it will act as a checklist and as you progress through the various headings, it will also make it very easy for you to spot areas that may need more work.

Begin by identifying the required dissertation sections. It can be helpful if you begin working on a section where there is already a feeling of confidence, and then move to another section where your input is also readily available. In this way, confidence can be gained and will gradually lead to working through each of the chapters to develop your dissertation.

If you prepared a comprehensive proposal you will be rewarded by being able to check your proposed research methodology. Remember that the tense should be changed from the future tense of the proposal to the past tense in writing up the methodology section because that reflects what you actually did.

Dissertation writing should be clear and unambiguous. A big help with this is to prepare a list of key words and phrases that are to be used throughout the paper and use those words whenever they are required rather than substitute alternative words and phrases that may lead to confusion.

Make sure that tables and graphs are introduced in your text. If you have a series of similar tables, use similar words in describing each one. You should also make sure that each table or graph is discussed in the text. If you have nothing to say about it, then question yourself as to why the table or graph has been inserted.

The Conclusions/Implications for further research chapter is one of the really important sections of a dissertation and all too often it is where a paper falls down. It should not simply restate the findings of the research; it should help the reader to understand what it all means, and put the research into perspective and perhaps link it to other research areas and key ideas. Make sure that suggestions for further research actually serve to link the study with other projects in the future.

It is a good idea to review chapter 1 after completing the dissertation to make sure that it actually does establish the pathway to the conclusions drawn and implications for further research. In other words, all the concepts mentioned in the conclusion should have been presented in chapter 1. If they are not, then the paper will not have the required level of cogency and cohesion. Any deficiencies will be clearly evident and this is the point at which they can be rectified.

The dissertation defense is beyond the scope of the editing activity but it is important to remember that its purpose is to give the researcher the opportunity to show what has been done in conducting the research on which the dissertation is based.

Disseration Editing—A Case Study

Leonora realized she was running out of time for the completion of her dissertation. She had finally established a table of contents but was beginning to panic. She was pretty sure that a number of in-text quotations had been omitted from her references and she was having a lot of trouble putting her conclusions into a coherent form.

Eight references were found to be missing from the Reference List and were inserted by her editor during the course of a full edit of Leonora’s dissertation. Leonora gathered her thoughts together and drafted a final section that included the key implications of her research and her editor helped to unify these into a concise and effective paragraph that summarized her findings, conclusions and implications for further research.
